Frequently Asked Questions
When did the Raptors beat Chicago Bulls at the ABA?
The Raptors defeated Chicago Bulls (who would win the NBA Championship the following year) on March 24, 1996. Final score: 109-108. Michael Jordan attempted a last second shot to win the Bulls game. However, it was not recorded because it was after midnight.
What was the first season for the Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors suffered a poor debut season. They won only 21 games. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors season marked the beginning of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Toronto Raptors. The Raptors joined the league as one of two expansions teams, along with Vancouver Grizzlies. It was also the NBA's first season outside of the United States.
Isiah THOMAS, an All Star point guard from the Detroit Pistons, became the General Manager. He helped draft Damon Stoudamire to be named Rookie and Year. In separate trades, they also acquired Tracy Murray as well as Oliver Miller. Thomas also introduced a brand new primary logo, featuring a play by basketball dinosaur and new pinstripe jerseys with the logo. The Raptors also added red and purple to their color scheme.
The Raptors' debut under new head coach Brendan Malone on November 3 ended in a victory against the New Jersey Nets at the SkyDome, but they lost their next seven games.
Murray finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game, and led them with 151 three-point field goals during that season. Miller scored 12.9 points, had 7.4 rebound, 1.4 steals and 1.9 block per game. Robertson added 9.3 point, 4.4 rebound, four assists, and two steals per night from the bench.
Despite having one the worst records in league, their attendance was excellent, at an average of over 17283 per game at SkyDome, now Rogers Centre.
How did the Raptors win this year's NBA championship?
The Toronto Raptors made a trade for DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl on July 18, 2018. They also traded a 2019 protected draft pick and a DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs.
On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Raptors for Delon Wright, C.J. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly afterwards.
Two big trades by the Toronto Raptors sent shockwaves through NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, as well as a 2019 draft pick (that was secured) were the first trades made by the Raptors. They received Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs in exchange. Then they traded Jonas Valanciunas to the Spurs and Delon WrightC.J. Miles and a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded for Marc Gasol--another All-Star, former Defensive Player-of-the-Year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's examine each trade.
The trade for Kawhi Leonard was a risk-reward move for the Raptors. Leonard, who is coming off an MVP-caliber year, is one of the top-5 players in the league when he is healthy. But, injury limited Leonard to just 9 games last season, and there are doubts about his long term health. The Raptors decided the reward was worth taking the chance and signed the deal. Leonard has been performing at an All-Star level so far. He has been in good health. Leonard is averaging 26 point, 8 rebounds and 3 assists per contest while shooting 49% from 3-point range and 38% from the field. If he can keep his health, he will give the Raptors a real shot at winning the NBA title.
Marc Gasol's trade was more a short-term deal than anything else. Gasol, who is in his mid-30s, is clearly past his prime. Yet, he is still a solid player who can bring valuable experience to a young Raptors roster. He averages 15 points and 8 rebounds per game. He also shoots 34% from three point range. C.J., Delon Wright and other young talents were given up by the Raptors. Miles was acquired by Gasol. However, the Raptors believe his expertise will prove to be valuable during playoffs.
The Raptors started the season with a 6-0 record. They won their 16th game against Cleveland Cavaliers on November 23rd. This broke their franchise record of 20 consecutive wins. On December 1, they reached 20 wins faster than ever before. Also, after defeating Washington Wizards 140-138 in double overtime on January 13, the Raptors set a franchise record for scoring the most points in franchise history. The Raptors were careful with Leonard and did not allow him to play more than 20 games during the season in order to avoid aggravating his injury. However, they managed to capture 2nd place in East, only trailing behind Milwaukee Bucks.
The Raptors continued to be successful in the playoffs. They beat the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and Milwaukee Bucks to make it to the NBA Finals for first time in their history. Leonard was named Finals MVP after the Raptors claimed their first title, beating the Golden State Warriors 6 to 6.
The Toronto Raptors had a great offseason. With two All-Stars on the roster, the Raptors are poised to be contenders for years to come. They have proven they can take risks and make bold moves when it comes down to building a championship-caliber team. It will be interesting to see if they can keep up this success in the future.
What number of NBA teams is Canada home to?
Since 2001, the Toronto Raptors have been the only Canadian NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies were an NBA team from 1995 to 2001 but relocated to Memphis and became the Memphis Grizzlies. Canada did have two teams--the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies--for a brief time during the late 1990s, but no other Canadian cities currently have an NBA team. Canadians love basketball, and many travel to the United States to watch games. The Toronto Raptors are a well-known and popular team that has been around since 1995. They continue to attract large audiences for home games at Scotiabank Arena. Each year, hundreds of Canadians travel to America for the NBA All-Star Weekend. With a population of over 38 million, Canada can have more than one NBA team. Many North American basketball fans debate the possibility of having a second NBA team. The Toronto Raptors are the only Canadian team in the NBA.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is a professional basketball league based in Canada. The league has six teams from Canada, including the Fraser Valley Bandits (Abbotsford), Edmonton Stingers [Edmonton], Alberta], Guelph Nighthawks—Guelph. Ontario), Hamilton Honey Badgers—Hamilton. Ontario), Saskatchewan Rattlers—Saskatoon. Saskatchewan and the Niagara River Lions—St. Catharines. Ontario). The CEBL is currently the only Canadian professional basketball league.
The National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC), a professional men's basketball team, was in existence from 2011 through 2020. It featured eight teams from Halifax, Moncton, Saint John, Cape Breton, Summerside, London, Windsor and Kitchener. The NBLC ceased operations in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canada has several junior basketball leagues. One example is the Canadian National Basketball League (CNB), which is a semi-professional men’s league that is based in Vancouver. CNB teams come from British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. The Canadian Elite Development League (CEDL) is another junior basketball league in Canada that fields teams primarily from the Greater Toronto Area. AC) or the Canadian Youth Basketball League. These leagues offer opportunities for young players to practice their skills in a supportive environment.
